Progressive Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner states that his skull and crossbones tattoo that was popularized by Nazi SS units is a symbol of love. Platner states he had no knowledge of the symbolism and stated he had no knowledge the skull and crossbones symbol was associated with the bad guys. Platner has since had the tattoo covered stating he received it while in the Marine Corp in Croatia during a night drinking.
Platner is leading a campaign against Republican Susan Collins of Maine and is the presumed Democratic nominee after the dropout of Democratic Governor Janet Mills. Collins has stated her opponents tattoos are “Concerning” and has said “I hope he has learned his lesson”.
Platner was later seen in a karaoke bar, signing off his rendition of Edelweiss with an extended hand gesture and loudly proclaiming “My heart goes out to you”.
